Question 36 (Textile Technology & Fibre Science)

Determine the correctness or otherwise of the following Assertion [a] and the Reason [r].
[a]: As the concentration of a surfactant in water increases, the surface tension of water
initially decreases and then becomes constant.
[r]: After reaching the Critical Micelle Concentration, additional surfactant molecules do
not further reduce the surface tension.

(A)Both [a] and [r] are true and [r] is the correct reason for [a]
(B)Both [a] and [r] are true but [r] is not the correct reason for [a]
(C)Both [a] and [r] are false

Frequently Asked Questions | FAQs

What is surfactant used for?

Surfactants are compounds that are used in a wide range of applications, primarily as surface-active agents that reduce the surface tension between two liquids or between a liquid and a solid. They can be found in products such as detergents, soaps, shampoos, and even in pharmaceuticals.
Surfactants are used in cleaning products to help dissolve dirt and grease and to improve the effectiveness of the cleaning process. They are also used in personal care products to help solubilize oils and other hydrophobic ingredients, allowing them to mix with water and be rinsed away easily.
In industrial applications, surfactants are used as emulsifiers to mix immiscible liquids, as wetting agents to improve the spread of liquids on solid surfaces, and as dispersants to prevent the clumping of solid particles.
