Question 16 (Textile Technology & Fibre Science)

Assuming the atomic mass of H=1, C=12, N=14 and O=16, the molecular mass of a repeat unit of Nylon 6 fibre is ___113_____.

[Show Answer]

write here

Molecular formula of Nylon 6 fibre is-C6H11NO
As given in the question atomic mass of hydrogen(H) is 1, Cabon(C) is 12, Nitrogen is 14 and Oxygen is 16.
So, molecular mass of a repeat unit of Nylon 6 fibre =6*(C)+11*(H)+1*(N)+1*(O)
=6*12+11*1+1*14+1*16
=72+11+14+16
=113 (Answer)

Frequently Asked Questions | FAQs

What is Nylon ?

Nylon is a synthetic polymer that is widely used in various applications, such as textile fibers, fishing lines, and engineering plastics. It was first developed in the 1930s by a team of scientists at DuPont, who were seeking a synthetic alternative to silk.

What is atomic mass ?

Atomic mass is the mass of an atom, typically expressed in atomic mass units (amu) or unified atomic mass units (u). The atomic mass of an atom is determined by the number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus, since these particles contribute most of the mass of the atom. The mass of electrons, which are much lighter than protons and neutrons, is generally negligible.

How to calculate atomic mass ?

To calculate the atomic mass of an atom, you can add the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. For example, the atomic mass of carbon-12, which has 6 protons and 6 neutrons, is 12 atomic mass units.

What is molecular formula ?

The molecular formula of a compound is a symbolic representation of the number and types of atoms that make up a molecule. It shows the chemical symbols of the elements in the compound and the number of atoms of each element using subscripts. For example, the molecular formula of water is H2O, which indicates that it contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The molecular formula of a compound can be used to determine its molar mass, which is the mass of one mole of the compound.
