Determine the abrasion resistance and pilling resistance of a fabric

Introduction: Abrasion and pilling resistance are important properties of textile materials that affect their durability and appearance. In this lab, we will determine the abrasion resistance and pilling resistance of a fabric sample.

Materials:

  • Abrasion tester
  • Pilling tester
  • Fabric sample
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Scale
  • Analytical balance
  • Data acquisition software

Procedure:

  1. Preparation of the test samples: Cut three fabric samples with dimensions of 5 cm x 5 cm using scissors. Mark the center of the sample with a marker to ensure proper alignment during testing.
  2. Determination of the weight of the fabric sample: Weigh the fabric sample using a scale and record the weight.
  3. Abrasion resistance test: Place the fabric sample on the abrasion tester and secure it in place with clamps. Set the tester to run for a specified number of cycles, such as 500 or 1000. The tester will apply a constant load to the fabric sample, causing it to rub against a standard abrasive material. After the specified number of cycles, remove the fabric sample from the tester and weigh it again. Record the weight loss and calculate the abrasion resistance.Abrasion resistance = Weight loss / Initial weight x 100%
  4. Pilling resistance test: Place the fabric sample in the pilling tester and secure it in place with clamps. Run the tester for a specified number of cycles, such as 500 or 1000. The tester will rub the fabric sample against a standard abrasive material, causing pills or balls of fibers to form on the surface of the fabric. After the specified number of cycles, remove the fabric sample from the tester and evaluate the degree of pilling using a rating scale. Record the rating and calculate the pilling resistance.Pilling resistance = Rating x Number of cycles
  5. Repeat the tests: Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other two fabric samples.
  6. Analysis of the results: Compare the abrasion resistance and pilling resistance of the three fabric samples. Analyze the data using statistical methods, such as mean and standard deviation.

Conclusion: In this lab, we have determined the abrasion resistance and pilling resistance of a fabric sample. Abrasion and pilling resistance are important properties that affect the durability and appearance of textile materials. By evaluating the performance of different fabric samples, we can determine their suitability for various applications.
