Evaluation and analysis of tearing strength of fabric using universal tester and Elmendrof tear tester

Introduction: Tearing strength is an important property of fabric that is used to determine its resistance to tearing. It is an essential property for many applications, such as clothing, upholstery, and industrial fabrics. In this lab, we will evaluate and analyze the tearing strength of fabric using two methods – the Universal Tester and the Elmendorf Tear Tester.

Materials:

  • Fabric sample
  • Universal Tester
  • Elmendorf Tear Tester
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

Procedure:

  1. Preparation of the Test Samples:
    a. Cut four rectangular fabric samples of 5 cm x 15 cm using scissors.
    b. Mark a line at the center of each sample using a pen or marker.
  2. Universal Tester Test:
    a. Clamp one end of a fabric sample in the Universal Tester.
    b. Hold the other end of the fabric sample with your hand.
    c. Start the Universal Tester and pull the fabric sample until it tears.
    d. Record the maximum force required to tear the fabric sample.
    e. Repeat steps b to d for the remaining three fabric samples.
  3. Elmendorf Tear Tester Test:
    a. Place a fabric sample on the base of the Elmendorf Tear Tester.
    b. Clamp the fabric sample in the Elmendorf Tear Tester, making sure that the center mark is aligned with the center of the tester.
    c. Adjust the pendulum of the tester to the required weight, such as 200 or 400 grams.
    d. Release the pendulum and allow it to swing and tear the fabric sample.
    e. Record the tearing force required to tear the fabric sample.
    f. Repeat steps b to e for the remaining three fabric samples.
  4. Repeat the Test: Repeat steps 2 and 3 for at least two more fabric samples and record the results.
  5. Analysis of the Results: Analyze the data using statistical methods, such as mean and standard deviation. Compare the tearing strength of the different fabric samples and observe the effect of different factors, such as fabric composition, weight, and construction on this property.
  6. Conclusion: In this lab, we have evaluated and analyzed the tearing strength of fabric using two methods – the Universal Tester and the Elmendorf Tear Tester. These methods are commonly used in the textile industry to determine the resistance of fabrics to tearing. By evaluating the tearing strength of different fabric samples, we can determine their suitability for specific applications that require fabrics to have a certain degree of tearing resistance.
