Govt. College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Serampore, is one of the pioneer institutions in India in the field of Engineering and Technology. The college was formerly known as College of Textile Technology, Serampore and it was established in 1908.
The Institute started with a certificate course in Weaving. After that in the year 1926 Women’s section started in separate premises. Institute started B.Sc(Tech) degree course in Textile Technology in the year 1957. Meanwhile, B.Sc degree turned into B.Tech in the year 1998 and started M.Tech in Mechanical Processing of Textiles.

The Textile Technology Department is the oldest of all the departments and in fact holds the status of pioneering department of the institute. The Department was established on 30th November 1908 as a weaving school with a two year certificate course on offer to cater technical education to local weavers and dyers. Over the years, 3 year diploma in Textile Technology was started in 1938 and 4 year degree in Textile Technology was started in the year 1957 under affiliation of University of Calcutta. A post graduate course in Mechanical Processing of Textiles was introduced in the year 1994 and M.Tech in Chemical Processing in Textiles in 2008. The B.Tech. and M.Tech courses are duly approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India.
The department is well known for its industry institute interaction as well as pursuing fundamental and applied research. The growth of the department owes a strong support from alumni, industry and faculty. The department has industrial and academic collaboration on specialized areas of study and this has positioned the institution as the harbinger of progressive changes and innovations.

Established in 1951 as Institute of Jute Technology (as an affiliated college of Calcutta University, Jointly established by University of Calcutta and Indian Jute Mills Association on a piece of demarcated land of Tarak Nath Palit Trust Prangan, Ballygunge Campus of University of Calcutta and managed by a Governing Council headed by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta, as the ex-officio President of the Governing Council.

3. Govt. College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Berhampore

This is one of the pioneer colleges in Textile Education and the genesis of this proposal for opening a post graduate programme in Textile Technology was a sequel to the wide spread reputation of this institute and intense desire and frequent request of the alumni who are well placed in their professional career. The college has a good interaction with textile industry and the infrastructure of the college is quite developed since it is carrying a glorious history of long existence.
This department has been offering undergraduate course (B.Tech in Textile Technology) since 1958. The department is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
